Stephenson Custom Builders Homes
Stephenson Custom Builders, Inc.
For more than three decades, Chuck Stephenson has watched Plano grow by leaps and bounds, as his own family and business have grown along with it.
"When we moved to Plano, the population was 16,000; now it's 280,000," says the owner of Stephenson Custom Builders, Inc. "We've seen Plano grow, and I became part of that pattern of growth when I started in the residential building business in 1986. We started in the Plano market but haven't built there in about three years because there aren't any lots left to build on. So we moved to the Frisco market, and now Frisco is growing like Plano was years ago."
Plano 's amazing growth over the past 30 years, surmises Stephenson, is attributable to the "forethought" of the city fathers.
"Originally what brought people to Plano was the low cost of living in a bedroom community and the highly rated school system," says the builder. "Then the city fathers brought in a lot of commercial development that helped the tax base."
Born and raised in Houston, Stephenson graduated from Texas A&M at College Station in 1967 with a degree in architectural construction. "I had an uncle who went to A&M and was involved in both commercial development and residential building," says Stephenson. "I admired what he had done."
Upon graduation, he returned to Houston to work for a petrochemical contractor, designing and building oil and chemical refineries throughout the world. Five years later, in 1973, he moved to Plano and went to work with a commercial construction and development company in Dallas, eventually becoming a partner. With DAL-MAC, Stephenson built everything from hotels and office buildings to schools and churches. After 15 years, he left the company as executive vice president and chief operating officer. He sold his interest in the operation and formed his own company in 1986.
Between jobs, however, the life-long builder took a short break - until his wife reminded him it was time to get back to work.
"At first, I didn't do anything, but Donna informed me that she married me for love and money, not lunch," Chuck says with a grin.
With a desire to try his hand at residential construction, the builder bought a lot in Willowbend, designed and built a spec home and then sold it.
"And there we went," he says. "If you have the ability to build something, when you're finished with it, if you've done a good job, you can stand back and admire your handiwork, and that's very satisfying. Even though I'm not out there with a hammer and nails, I'm the one orchestrating it and in control of the quality and the end product."
While he works as "chief cook and bottle washer" in the family, wife Donna serves as designer. She enjoys working with her husband whom she describes as a "very conservative business man, very conscientious and dedicated."
"Chuck always knows exactly what's happening on the property before he ever pours a slab," says his wife. "He is very organized and extremely intelligent; he's an engineer so he knows what he is doing."
The couple's only child, Stacey Molthan works as the company's office manager. She and husband, Michael, Chief Operating Officer of Stephenson Custom Builders, Inc. have two sons - Hudson, 7, and Hogan, 5 - the Stephenson's only grandchildren and their focus away from work.
"Donna and I are actively involved with our grandchildren," says Chuck. "We have a lake house at Lake Kiowa near Gainesville with all the water sport toys, and our grandchildren love to go fishing and ride bicycles, jet skis and the boat. We try to get up there every weekend during the summertime."
Donna says Chuck is a "family man" who assists her in spoiling their grandsons.
"We have a blast with our grandchildren," she says. "We have fun with our business and we have fun with our family life; that's what it's all about."
The Stephensons are members of Glen Eagles Country Club and Prairie Creek Baptist Church in Plano. "We've been members there for more than 25 years," says Chuck, "ever since I built their gymnasium and the pastor invited us to visit."
A self-described "big ol' Texas boy" with a booming voice, the builder eludes Texas confidence and charm. And while he may appear burly, he's really a big teddy bear.
His life's philosophy bears this out.
"I treat everyone like I want to be treated myself," he says, paraphrasing the Golden Rule. "I've been very fortunate throughout my working career and have had some semblance of financial success, but I don't consider myself better than my carpenter who's out in the field driving nails."
And he'll promise you this: "My word is my bond. If I tell you I'm going to do something, it's going to be done."
Michael and Stacey Molthan have brought this high quality custom home building to the Park Cities area.
